Using your own Anthropic API key.

JobMap's AI features run on your own Anthropic account. It takes about five minutes to set up, and you only pay for what you use.

What the key unlocks

Two features, both optional. Everything else in JobMap — the pipeline, contacts, interviews, offers, analytics, reminders — works without a key.

Résumé import

Drop in an existing résumé and it's read into structured profile data — jobs, skills, education, certifications — which you review before anything is saved.

Résumé builder

Paste a job posting — or its URL — and get a résumé tailored to that specific role, built from the history already in your profile.

Why your own key

JobMap talks to Anthropic directly from your device. Your résumé and the job postings you paste never pass through a JobMap server, and there's no subscription in the middle — you're billed by Anthropic for exactly the usage you generate, and you can revoke the key at any time.

Getting a key

  1. Go to console.anthropic.com and sign in, or create an account.
  2. Add credit. API access is separate from a Claude.ai subscription and needs its own balance — under Billing, add a payment method and buy credits. A Claude Pro plan does not cover API usage.
  3. Open Settings → API keys and choose Create key. Name it something you'll recognise later, like JobMap.
  4. Copy it immediately. It starts with sk-ant- and is shown only once. If you lose it, delete that key and create another.

Adding it to JobMap

  1. Open Settings → Anthropic API Key.
  2. Paste the key and choose Save. You'll get a clear error if it can't be stored — if you see one, the key was not saved.
  3. Choose Test connection. That sends a single tiny request to confirm the key works, so you find out now rather than mid-résumé.

The key is stored in your operating system's keychain — the same place your browser keeps saved passwords. It stays on that device and is never synced to JobMap.

What it costs

You're billed by Anthropic per request, and JobMap only calls the API when you explicitly import or generate a résumé — never in the background. Importing uses a small, fast model; generating a tailored résumé uses a stronger one, since that's where quality matters.

Typical use is measured in cents rather than dollars, but rates change, so check Anthropic's pricing for current numbers. You can also set a spend limit in the console if you'd like a hard ceiling.

If something goes wrong

"Test connection" fails. Usually the key was copied incompletely, or the account has no credit. Check the balance in the console, then create a fresh key.

JobMap keeps asking for a key. Make sure Save reported success rather than an error, and that you're on the latest version — the changelog notes a 1.0.3 fix for keys silently failing to save on macOS.
